Time of day matters.

When shooting outdoors consider early morning or late afternoon. The light at these times of the day tend to be warmer with more attractive colors. Mid day light is harsh and washes out color in your photo.

Overcast days are good for portraits and macro photography since we tend to leave the sky out of the image. An overcast day diffuses the light to give the subject good lighting without the harsh shadows produced by the mid day sun. If you have to shoot mid day consider using your flash outdoors to fill in those shadows.
